Mia's Story

Jamaile's Story

I was born and raised in Bridgeport, CT by my mother. My grandmother was born and raised in  Biloxi MS, where Hurricane Katrina hit in 2005.  I had first cousins in Biloxi who rode out the storm. With all the devastation, they came to Connecticut to stay through the aftermath of Katrina. There were two of my cousins who suffered tremendously during this time. Over the years since they went back to Mississippi, most of my cousins have gotten over their fears. But in late summer of 2017 one of the two victims of the hurricane committed suicide, Katrina’s effects took the life of my cousin who suffered from PTSD because of his experiences in the storm.

Jamaile was also born and raised in Connecticut. Her mother was from the island of Puerto Rico and father from Jamaica. Living in Puerto Rico was Jamaile’s great grandfather, now 96 years old. Everything was nice and nothing bad had really happened until hurricane Irma and Maria hit in 2017--both as category 4 hurricanes. None of Jamaile’s family members in the U.S. could reach him until about 1-2 weeks later.Thankfully he is okay and nothing was horribly damaged, but no family should have to wait that long to know the status of other family members.

From these stories we came together and made this device to help all families.
